Responsible consumption of water

In the cement production cycle, water is essential to reduce the temperature of gases leaving the kiln system and of cement during grinding process, to abate dust in the plants and to cool down engines and machines. The recycling of water previously used in the process, where possible, is always favored.

Find out more about our 2022 performance:

11.3%
of water withdrawn for cement production comes from recovered storm water

Storm water recovery systems allow to reduce water withdrawal from other sources.

Our best performance
In Czech Republic 100% water used in the cement production cycle comes from recovered water

Water is one of concrete main ingredients and therefore it is irreplaceable. However, if properly dosed, it can come from recovery sources, such as rainwater and washing water.

   35%
of water used in concrete comes from water recovery systems

Our best performance
In Germany 53% of water used for concrete production comes from recovered water.

Emissions reduction

The main emissions related to the production of clinker, other than CO2, are those of dust, NOx and SO2.

Find out more about our 2022 performance:

 -76%
of specific dust emissions from 2017

Dust emissions from the kiln system has been reduced thanks to the installation of new filtration systems.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), deriving from combustion in the clinker kiln system, have been reduced with abatement systems using urea or ammonia solutions and new-generation Low-NOx burners.

-14%
of specific NOx emissions from 2017

-19%
of specific SO2 emissions from 2017

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, coming from sulfur contents of natural resources and fuels, are controlled imposing strict limits to sulfur content for purchased raw materials and fuels.
